Creative Writing
Patrick’s first foray into writing occurred during high school by sheer accident. He was going to direct a one-act play as part of his class’s fall theatre festival but two of four classmates were going to direct their own previously-written plays. Patrick and the remaining director were asked by their instructor if they wanted to write plays, allowing the evening of plays to become a “new work festival” instead, something that hadn’t ever been done. In agreeing, Patrick instantly fell in love with the creative writing process, especially live-performance based work. He went on to write and directed three more plays during high school.
Fueled by his new found passion, Patrick continued his purist of playwrighting by attending The Theatre School at DePaul University. While studying under some of the best working playwrights in Chicago, Patrick honed his storytelling skills through every opportunity available. With his fellow classmates, he revamped and produced several new work festivals while at The Theatre School. From this hard work, he was awarded the coveted “New Playwright Series” production slot, which granted a senior playwriting student a fully produced production of one of their plays. Patrick’s play The Civic closed out the 2009-2010 season weeks before he graduated.
Since graduating, his playwriting work has been produced around Chicago consistently, ranging from one-minute play performances to full-length commissions. His most recent commissions include plays being developed by The New Colony and The Arc Theatre, the latter selecting him as their inaugural choice for their new work development program.
Samples of Patrick’s playwriting can be found on New Play Exchange for production consideration. If you are not a member of New Play Exchange, please contact Patrick directly requesting an inquiry sampling of his work.
Dramatic Criticism
After graduating from The Theatre School at DePaul University, Patrick began exploring other creative outlets and opportunities. In 2018, he discovered Chicago’s immersive theatre scene, instantly falling in love with the art form. In exploring and learning more about the immersive theatre, Patrick discovered No Proscenium, an online news periodical serving as the guide to everything immersive. In becoming an avid follower of their work followed by a recommendation from colleagues at The Theatre School, Patrick joined No Proscenium becoming a contributor.
Patrick currently serves as their Chicago Curator, covering experiences produced in and around Chicago. As a regular contributor, he has provided reviews on VR and online escape room experiences. You can find a majority of his reviews and contributions to No Proscenium on Medium.
